Prefinished wood
Prefinished solid hardwood floors and engineered hardwood floors are installed in one day. No on-site finishing is needed so you can walk on the floor as soon as it is installed. Boards do not need to be nailed or glued down. Instead, they click together to float over the subfloor. Often, a thin foam sheet is placed under the flooring to dampen sounds and provide cushioning. It?s sometimes advisable to use an underlayment with a moisture barrier attached. It may be possible to lay the new floor over an existing floor, which makes installation easier and less costly.
Unfinished wood
Unfinished hardwood flooring installation is more complex. Boards are nailed or glued to the subfloor, which may need to be repaired if it's damaged or uneven. If it?s not thick enough, a layer of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) must be added. Then the boards are sanded, stained, and sealed, a process that takes about 7 days. An underlayment may need to be placed under the floor to create a moisture and sound barrier and to even out small imperfections in the subfloor. Since the acclimation process takes about 7 days, the project is completed in about two weeks.
