hardwood flooring installation

A hardwood flooring care guide

Hardwood flooring has always been one of the most popular flooring materials out there, because it is durable, beautiful, and an all-around sound investment for your home. It lends an air of chic elegance to any room that other flooring materials just can't touch.

While there are many types of hardwood flooring out there to choose from, one thing they all have in common is their maintenance requirements. Luckily, those requirements are few, and caring for a new hardwood flooring installation is a lot easier than most people think. Here's everything you need to know to keep your new hardwood floors looking great for years, even decades to come!

Protect them from water

The biggest concern for homeowners with hardwood flooring in the Pacific NW is, without a doubt, water. Water tracked into the home can cause a variety of issues for hardwood floors, like warping, cupping, and separating. The good news is, you don't have to do much to keep the problem under control.

You probably want to institute a "no-shoes" policy, at least during the rainier months. It's also important to place waterproof mats in any zones of the house where water will be an issue. Place them at any entrances, as well as in front of any sinks or other water sources. Finally, make sure to clean up any liquid spills as soon as possible.

Be sure to sweep regularly

The second biggest issue to worry about is gritty dirt eroding the finish of your hardwood floors. The no-shoes policy will go a long way toward staving off this type of damage, but the best way to keep it under control is to sweep or vacuum regularly. Just be sure to disengage your vacuum's beater brush before using it on hardwood flooring, to avoid damaging your floors.

Avoid heavy physical damage

What we mean by that is that you should avoid dropping heavy sharp objects whenever possible, and always lift your furniture or other heavy items when moving them. It's also a good idea to put soft pads on the feet of all of your furniture, to further protect the floor from gouges.
